Draper Studio Extended Family Session

When it comes to extended family session, it is generally a lot more common to do them outside. Which is why I wanted to show this Draper studio extended family session.

Why pick a studio?

If you live in Utah, you know how unpredictable the weather can be and sometimes the time everyone is available won’t work with the where the sun will be and it makes sense to do it indoors.

We are incredibly blessed here in Utah that we have essentially and unlimited amount of outdoor options and studio options. I’ve traveled to a few states and noticed that they don’t rent out studios like we do here. There are studios, but usually it’s used by the same photographer because they are the ones leasing it.

What to look for, when choosing a studio

Location, space and lighting. I would say these are the main things I always look for in a studio if I’m doing an extended family session. I first find out where everyone is located and try to find one that is in the middle for everyone, same as an outdoor location.

Next is space because this is somethingI’ve been running into. Not all studios are going to work depending on the size of your family. I have my go to studio for smaller families that are 3-4 people and my go to studios for bigger families. The only downside is the bigger studios tend to run a little more pricey but, you’ll want the space if you have a bigger family.

As always, we have lighting. My personal preference is more of what’s called the “bright and airy”. So I generally stay from studios that have darker features and floors. I also like to reach out to studios to ask how lighting is. Does it streak through the windows? Is there a time when lighting is most consistent so the whole family looks the same for group photos? Then I ask if artificial lighting is included in the rental, if it’s not I generally bring my own for emergencies.
